STARTING AND OPERATING
NOTE: The torqu e converter clutch will not engage
until the transm ission fluid and engine coolant are warm
[usually after 1-3 miles (1.6 - 4.8 km) of driving]. Because
the engine speed is higher when the torqu e converter
clutch is not engaged , it may seem as if the transm ission
is not shifting into Overd rive when cold. This is norm al.
Manu ally shifting (using the ERS shift control) betw een 4
(direct gear) and 5/ D (Overd rive gear) positions will
demonstrate that the transm ission is able to shift into and
out of Overd rive.
Rocking the Vehicle
If the vehicle becom es stu ck in snow, sand , or mud, it can
often be moved by a rocking motion. Move the gear
selector rhythm ically betw een D (Drive) and R (Reverse),
while applying slight pressu re to the accelerator.
NOTE: The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and
Traction Control (if equ ipped) shou ld be turned OFF
before attem pting to rock the vehicle. Refer to “Electronic
Brake Control System ” in Section 3 of this manu al.
The least amount of accelerator pedal pressu re to main-
tain the rocking motion withou t spinning the wheels or
racing the engine is most effective. Racing the engine or
spinning the wheels, due to the frustration of not freeing
the vehicle, may lead to transm ission overheating and
failu re. Allow the engine to idle with the transm ission
selector in N (Neutral) for at least one minu te after every
NOTE: If the vehicle has not been driven in several
days, the first few second s of operation after shifting the
transm ission into gear may seem sluggish. This is due to
the fluid partially draining from the torqu e converter into
the transm ission. This cond ition is norm al and will not
cause damage to the transm ission. The torqu e converter
will refill within five second s of shifting from Park into
any other gear position.
