and / or the flow rate is red uced. If you must cross
flowing water avoid depths in excess of 9 inches. The
flowing water can erod e the stream bed causing you r
vehicle to sink into deeper water. Determ ine exit point(s)
that are downstream of you r entry point to allow for
drifting.
Driving In Snow, Mud and Sand
In heavy snow, when pulling a load , or for additional
control at slow er speed s, shift the transm ission to a low
gear and shift the transfer case to 4WD LOW if necessary.
Refer to “Fou r-Wheel Drive Operation” in this section.
Do not shift to a lower gear than necessary to maintain
forw ard motion. Over-revving the engine can spin the
wheels and traction will be lost.
Standing Water
Avoid driving in stand ing water deeper than 20 inches,
and red uce speed approp riately to minim ize wave ef-
fects. Maxim um speed in 20 inches of water is less than 5
mph (8 km/ h).
Avoid abru pt downshifts on icy or slippery road s, be- 5
cause engine braking may cause skid ding and loss of
control.

Hill Climbing
After driving throu gh deep water, insp ect you r vehicle
fluids and lubricants (engine oil, transm ission oil, axle,
transfer case) to assu re the fluids have not been contam i-
nated . Contam inated fluid (milky, foam y in appearance)
shou ld be flushed / changed as soon as possible to pre-
vent component damage.
NOTE: Before attem pting to climb a hill, determ ine the
cond itions at the crest and / or on the other side.
Before clim bing a steep hill, shift the transm ission to a
lower gear and shift the transfer case to 4WD LOW. Use
