It is dangerou s to shift the selector lever out of P
(Park ) or N (Neutral) if the engin e speed is high er
than idle speed . If you r foot is not firm ly on the
brak e pedal, the veh icle could accelerate quickly
forw ard or in reverse. You could lose control of the
veh icle and hit som eon e or som eth ing. Only shift
into gear when the engin e is idlin g norm ally and
when you r foot is firm ly on the brak e pedal.
Damage to the tran smission may occur if the follow -
ing precau tion s are not observed :

Shift into P (Park ) only after the veh icle has come
to a complete stop .
Shift into or out of R (Reverse) only after the
veh icle has come to a complete stop and the engin e
is at idle speed .

Do not shift from R (Reverse), P (Park ), or N
(Neutral) into any forw ard gear when the engin e is
above idle speed .
Shift Lock Manual Override — If Equipped
Your vehicle may be equ ipped with a shift lock manu al
overrid e. The manu al overrid e may be used in the event
that the shift lever shou ld fail to move from Park with the
key in the ON position and the brake pedal depressed . To
operate the shift lock manu al overrid e, perform the
follow ing step s:
Before shiftin g into any gear, make sure you r foot
is firm ly on the brak e pedal.
