STARTING AND OPERATING
If  you   stall   or  begin   to   lose  forw ard   motion   while
climbing  a steep  hill, allow you r vehicle  to come to a  stop
and  immediately    apply   the  brakes.   Restart  the   engine
and   shift  to   R  (Reverse).  Back   slow ly down    the  hill
allow ing the  compression   braking   of the  engine  to  help
regu late you r speed . If the  brakes  are requ ired  to control
vehicle  speed , apply   them  lightly  and   avoid  locking  or
skid ding  the tires.
Rem ember,  never  drive  diagon  ally across  a  hill-alw ays
drive  straigh  t up  or down.
If the  wheels  start  to slip  as  you approach   the  crest  of a
hill, ease off the  accelerator  and maintain   forw ard motion
by  turning  the  front  wheels  slow ly. This  may  provid e  a
fresh  “bite”   into  the  surface   and   will  usually   provid e
traction  to  complete  the  climb.
Traction Downhill
WARN ING!
Shift  the  transm ission  into  a  low  gear  and  the  transfer
case to 4WD  LOW range.  Let the vehicle  go slow ly down
the   hill  with   all  four   wheels   turning    against   engine
compression   drag.   This  will  perm it  you  to  control  the
vehicle  speed  and  direction.
If  the   engin e  stalls,   you   lose   forw ard  motion  ,  or
cannot   make  it  to  the   top  of  a steep   hill   or  grad e,
never  attem pt  to turn  arou nd.  To do  so may  resu lt in
tip ping  and   rollin g  the  veh icle.  Alw ays  back   care-
fully  straigh  t down  a  hill  in R  (Reverse)  gear.  Never
back  down  a hill  in N (Neutral)   usin g only  the brak e.
When  descend  ing mountains    or  hills, rep eated  braking
can cause  brake  fade  with  loss of  braking  control.  Avoid
rep eated  heavy   braking  by  downshifting    the  transm is-
sion  whenever  possible.
