STARTING AND OPERATING
If you stall or begin to lose forw ard motion while
climbing a steep hill, allow you r vehicle to come to a stop
and immediately apply the brakes. Restart the engine
and shift to R (Reverse). Back slow ly down the hill
allow ing the compression braking of the engine to help
regu late you r speed . If the brakes are requ ired to control
vehicle speed , apply them lightly and avoid locking or
skid ding the tires.
Rem ember, never drive diagon ally across a hill-alw ays
drive straigh t up or down.
If the wheels start to slip as you approach the crest of a
hill, ease off the accelerator and maintain forw ard motion
by turning the front wheels slow ly. This may provid e a
fresh “bite” into the surface and will usually provid e
traction to complete the climb.
Traction Downhill
WARN ING!
Shift the transm ission into a low gear and the transfer
case to 4WD LOW range. Let the vehicle go slow ly down
the hill with all four wheels turning against engine
compression drag. This will perm it you to control the
vehicle speed and direction.
If the engin e stalls, you lose forw ard motion , or
cannot make it to the top of a steep hill or grad e,
never attem pt to turn arou nd. To do so may resu lt in
tip ping and rollin g the veh icle. Alw ays back care-
fully straigh t down a hill in R (Reverse) gear. Never
back down a hill in N (Neutral) usin g only the brak e.
When descend ing mountains or hills, rep eated braking
can cause brake fade with loss of braking control. Avoid
rep eated heavy braking by downshifting the transm is-
sion whenever possible.
