UNDERSTANDING YOUR INSTRUMENT PANEL
211
you  und erstand  and   save you  concern   abou t these  “ap -
parent”   malfunctions,   you  must   und erstand   a point   or
two  abou t the  transm  ission  and  recep tion  of  rad io sig-
nals.
AM Reception
AM sou nd is based  on  wave amplitude,   so AM  recep tion
can be disru pted  by  such things  as lightning,   power  lines
and  neon  signs.
Two Types of Signals
FM Reception
There   are  two   basic  typ es  of   rad io  signals...  AM   or
Amplitude   Mod ulation,  in  which  the transm  itted  sou nd
causes  the  amplitude,    or  height,  of  the  rad io waves   to
vary...  and  FM  or Frequ ency  Mod ulation,   in which   the
frequ ency of  the wave  is  varied  to carry  the  sou nd .
Because  FM  transm ission  is  based   on  frequ ency varia-
tions,  interference   that  consists   of amplitude    variations   4
can be  filtered  out,  leaving  the  recep tion relatively  clear,
which  is the  major  featu re of FM  rad io.
NOTE:     The  rad io,  steering   wheel   rad io  controls    (if
equ ipped),  and   6 disc  CD/  DVD changer   (if  equ ipped)
will rem ain  active for  up  to 90 second s after  the  ignition
switch  has  been  turned   off, depend  ing  upon  the  acces-
sory  delay   setting.   Opening   a  vehicle   front  door   will
cancel  this featu re.
Electrical Disturbances
Radio  waves  may  pick up  electrical  distu rbances  during
transm ission.   They  mainly   affect  the  wave   amplitude,
and   thu s  rem ain  a  part    of  the  AM   recep tion.  They
interfere   very  little   with  the  frequ ency   variations   that
carry  the  FM signal.
