Loose Fuel Filler Cap Message
EMISSIONS INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE
PROGRAMS
In som e localities, it may be a legal requ irem ent to pass
an insp ection of you r vehicle’s emissions control system .
Failu re to pass could prevent vehicle registration.
Shou ld the “Loose Fuel Filler Cap ” or “gASCAP” mes-
sage appear, there may be a problem in the evap orative
system . Before taking the vehicle into a qualified Dealer-
ship Service center, check first to see if the fuel filler cap
is possibly loose, improp erly installed , or damaged . A
loose fuel filler cap message will be displayed in the
instru ment cluster. Tighten the gas cap until a ЉclickingЉ
sou nd is heard . This is an ind ication that the gas cap is
prop erly tightened . Press the odometer reset button to
turn the message off. If the problem persists, the message
will appear the next time the vehicle is started . If the
problem is detected twice in a row, the system will turn
on the Malfu nction Ind icator Light (MIL). Resolving the
problem will turn the MIL light off. Take you r vehicle in
to a qualified Dealership Service center.
For states, which have an I/ M (Insp ection and
Maintenance) requ irem ent, this check verifies the
follow ing: the MIL (Malfu nction Ind icator Light)
is functioning and is not on when the engine is running,
and that the OBD (On Board Diagnostic) system is read y
for testing.
Norm ally, the OBD system will be read y. The OBD 7
system may not be read y if you r vehicle was recently
serviced , if you recently had a dead battery, or a battery
rep lacem ent. If the OBD system shou ld be determ ined
not read y for the I/ M test, you r vehicle may fail the test.
