NOTE:
The   transm ission   electronics    constantly    monitor    the
transm ission  oil tem peratu re. If the  transm ission gets  too
hot, the  transm ission  will change  the way  it shifts  to help
control   the   cond ition.   This  may   resu lt  in   a  slightly
different  feeling  or resp onse  during  norm al  operation   in
D  (Drive)   position.    If  the   transm ission   becom es  hot
enou gh the  O/ D  OFF ind icator light  and  TRANS  OVER
TEMP warning   light in  the instru ment  cluster  may  come
on.  After  the transm  ission  cools  down,  it  will  retu rn to
norm al operation.
•  transmThe torquissione  converterfluid andcluenginetch  wcoolantill  not engageare  warmuntil(uthesu-
ally  after  1–3 miles  (1.6–4.8 km)  of  driving).  Because
engine   speed   is  higher   when   the  torqu e  converter
clutch  is not  engaged , it  may  seem as  if the  transm is-
sion is not  shifting  into “Overd rive”  when  cold. This is
consid ered  a   norm al  cond ition.  Pressing   the  “O/  D
OFF” switch  will  show that  the  transm ission  is able to  5
shift  into and  out  of “Overd  rive.”
If the vehicle  has  not been  driven  for several  days,  the
first  few second s of  operation  after  shifting  the  trans-
mission  into gear  may seem  sluggish.  This is due to the
transm ission  fluid  partially   draining   from  the  torqu e
converter   into  the  transm ission.  This  is consid ered   a
norm al  cond ition  and  will  not  cause  damage   to  the
transm ission.  The torqu e  converter  will  refill within   5
second s of  shifting  from  P (Park)  into  any  other  gear
position.
Torque Converter Clutch
A featu re  designed   to  improve   fuel  econom y has  been
added   to  the  autom atic  transm ission  of  this  vehicle.  A
clutch  within  the torqu e converter  engages   autom atically
at calibrated   speed s. This  may  resu lt in a  slightly  differ-
ent  feeling or  resp onse during   norm al operation   in  high
gear.  When  the  vehicle  speed  drop s or  during   accelera-
tion,  the clutch  autom  atically and  smoothly   disengages.
