Drive Belts - Check Condition and Tension
At the mileages show n in the approp riate “Maintenance
Sched ule,” check all drive belts for cond ition and prop er
tension. Improp er belt tension can cause belt slippage
and failu re.
Spark Plugs
Spark plugs must fire prop erly to assu re engine perfor-
mance and emission control. New spark plugs shou ld be
installed at the specified mileage. The entire set shou ld be
rep laced if there is any malfunction due to a faulty spark
plug. Refer to the “Vehicle Emission Control Inform a-
tion” label in the engine compartm ent for spark plug
inform ation.
Insp ect the drive belt for evid ence of cuts, cracks, or
glazing and rep lace them if there is any sign of damage
which could resu lt in belt failu re. If adjustm ent is re-
quired , adjust the belts accord ing to the specifications
and proced ures show n in the Service Manu al.
Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter requ ires the use of unlead ed fuel
only. Lead ed gasoline will destroy the effectiveness of the
converter as an emission control device.
Und er norm al operating cond itions, the catalytic con- 7
verter will not requ ire maintenance. However, it is im-
portant to keep the engine prop erly tuned to assu re
prop er catalyst operation and prevent possible catalyst
damage.
Special tools are requ ired to prop erly measu re tension
and to restore belt tension to factory specifications. Also,
check belt rou ting to make sure there is no interference
betw een the belts and other engine components.
