STARTING AND OPERATING
TIRE CHAINS
TIRE ROTATION RECOMMENDATIONS
Certain models have sufficient tire-to-bod y clearance to
allow use of tire chains. Install chain s on rear tires only.
Follow these recom mend ations to guard against damage
and excessive tire and chain wear:
Tires on the front and rear axles of vehicles operate at
different load s and perform different steering, hand ling,
and braking functions. For these reasons, they wear at
unequ al rates, and develop irregu lar wear patterns.
•
Do not install tire chains or traction devices on ve-
hicles with larger than P225/ 75R16 size tires. These
tires are too large for sufficient bod y clearance with
chains or other traction devices.
These effects can be red uced by timely rotation of tires.
The benefits of rotation are especially worthw hile with
aggressive tread designs such as those on On/ Off Road
typ e tires. Rotation will increase tread life, help to main-
tain mud, snow, and wet traction levels, and contribu te to
a smooth, quiet rid e.
•
•
Use SAE class “S” tire chains or traction devices only.
Follow
tire chain manu factu rer’s instru ctions for
mounting chains.
Follow the recommend ed tire rotation frequ ency for your
type of driving found in the “Maintenance Schedules”
Section of this manu al. More frequ ent rotation is permis-
sible if desired . The reasons for any rap id or unusual wear
shou ld be corrected prior to rotation being perform ed.
