MMT In Gasoline
Sulfur In Gasoline
MMT is a manganese containing metallic additive that is
blend ed into som e gasoline to increase octane. Gasoline
blend ed with MMT provid es no perform ance advantage
beyond gasoline of the sam e octane nu mber withou t
MMT. Gasoline blend ed with MMT red uces spark plug
life and red uces emission system perform ance in som e
vehicles. The manu factu rer recom mend s that gasoline
withou t MMT be used in you r vehicle. The MMT content
of gasoline may not be ind icated on the gasoline pump,
therefore, you shou ld ask you r gasoline retailer whether
or not his/ her gasoline contains MMT.
If you live in the northeast United States, you r vehicle
may have been designed to meet California low emission
stand ard s with clean burning, low sulfur, California
gasoline. Gasoline sold outsid e of California is perm itted
to have higher sulfur levels which may affect the perfor-
mance of the vehicle’s catalytic converter. This may cause
the “Malfu nction Ind icator Light” to illuminate.
Illumination of this light while operating on high sulfur 5
gasoline does not necessarily mean you r emission control
system is malfunctioning. The manu factu rer recom -
mend s that you try a different brand of unlead ed gaso-
line having lower sulfur to determ ine if the problem is
fuel related prior to retu rning you r vehicle to an autho-
rized dealer for service.
It is even more important to look for gasoline withou t
MMT in Canad a becau se MMT can be used at levels
higher than allow ed in the United States. MMT is pro-
hibited in Federal and California reform ulated gasoline.
