the transm ission with an improp er fluid level will greatly
red uce the life of the transm ission and of the fluid.
At norm al operating tem peratu re (approxim ately 180° F
(82° C), the fluid level is correct if it is in the HOT region
(cross-hatched area) on the oil level ind icator. The fluid
level ind icator shou ld be in the COLD region at 70° F (21°
C) fluid tem peratu re.
To check the autom atic transm ission fluid level prop erly,
the follow ing proced ure must be used :

The vehicle must be on level grou nd .
If the fluid level is low, add sufficient fluid to bring to the
prop er level. Refer to Recom mend ed Fluids, Lubricants
and Genu ine Parts for correct fluid typ e.

Fully apply parking brake.
Fluid is added throu gh the dipstick tube.

Apply the brakes and shift the transm ission into P
NOTE: To prevent dirt and water from entering the
transm ission after checking or rep lenishing fluid, make
certain that the dipstick cap is prop erly reseated .

The fluid MUST be checked with the transm ission in
P (Park) to be sure that the fluid is accurate.
Fluid Level Check – 4.7L Engin es (5–45RFE)
Check the fluid level while the transm ission is at norm al
operating tem peratu re 180°F (82°C). This occurs after at

Remove dipstick and note read ing.
Wipe the dipstick clean and reinsert until seated .
