PARKING BRAKE
When driving on wet or slushy road s, it is possible for a
wedge of water to build up betw een the tire and road
surface. This is know n as hyd rop laning and may cause
partial or complete loss of vehicle control and stop ping
ability. To red uce this possibility, the follow ing precau -
tions shou ld be observed :
The parking brake shou ld alw ays be applied when the
driver is not in the vehicle.
WARN ING!
Never use Park position on an autom atic tran smis-
sion as a substitu te for the park ing brak e. Alw ays
apply park ing brak e fully when park ed to guard
again st veh icle movem ent and possib le injury or
damage.

Slow down during rainstorm s or when the road s are
slushy.

Slow down if road has stand ing water or puddles.
Replace tires when tread wear ind icators first becom e
visible.
When parking on a flat surface, place the gear selector in
the P (Park) position first, and then apply the parking
brake.

When parking on a hill, it is important to apply the
parking brake before placing the gear selector in P (Park),
otherw ise the load on the transm ission locking mecha-
nism may make it difficult to move the selector out of
park. As an added precau tion, turn the front wheels
tow ard the curb on a downhill grad e and away from the
curb on an uphill grad e.
