CAUTIO N!
Your vehicle is equ ipped with a sop histicated onboard
diagnostic system called OBD II. This system monitors
the perform ance of the emissions, engine, and autom atic
transm ission control system s. When these system s are
operating prop erly, you r vehicle will provid e excellent
perform ance and fuel econom y, as well as engine emis-
sions well within current governm ent regu lations.
Prolon ged drivin g with the “Malfu nction Indicator
Ligh t” on could cause furth er damage to the emis-
sion control system . It could also affect fuel econ omy
and driveab ility. The veh icle must be serviced before
any emission s tests can be perform ed.
If the “Malfu nction Indicator Ligh t” is flash ing
while the engin e is running, severe catalytic con-
verter damage and power loss will soon occur. Im-
mediate service is req uired .
If any of these system s requ ire service, the OBD II system
will turn on the “Malfu nction Ind icator Light.” It will
also store diagnostic codes and other inform ation to
assist you r service technician in making rep airs. Al-
thou gh you r vehicle will usually be drivable and not
need tow ing, see you r dealer for service as soon as
possible.
Loose Fuel Filler Cap
If the vehicle diagnostic system determ ines that the fuel
filler cap is loose, improp erly installed , or damaged , a
“Check Gascap ” message will display in the Electronic
Vehicle Inform ation Center (EVIC) — if equ ipped. If this
occurs, tighten the fuel filler cap prop erly and press the
odometer reset button to turn off the message. If the
problem continu es, the message will appear the next time
the vehicle is started .
