TOWING A DISABLED VEHICLE
WITHOUT THE IGNITION KEY
Special care must be taken when the vehicle is tow ed
with the ignition in the LOCK position. The only ap-
proved method of tow ing withou t the ignition key is
with a flat bed tru ck. Prop er tow ing equ ipment is neces-
sary to prevent damage to the vehicle.

When “rock ing” a stu ck veh icle by movin g be-
tween “First” and R (Reverse), do not spin the
wheels faster than 15 mph (24 km/h), or drivetrain
damage may resu lt.
Racin g the engin e or spinning the wheels too fast
may lead to tran smission overh eatin g and failu re.
It can also damage the tires. Do not spin the
wheels above 35 mph (55 km/h).

Flat tow ing of vehicles equ ipped with an autom atic
transm ission, is only perm itted within the follow ing
limitations:

Fast spinning tires can be dangerou s. Forces gen er-
ated by excessive wheel speed s may cause tire dam-
age or failu re. A tire could explod e and injure
som eon e. Do not spin you r veh icle’s wheels faster
than 35 mph (55 km/h) when you are stu ck, and don’t
let anyon e near a spinning wheel, no matter what the
speed .
With The Ign ition Key
Your vehicle may be tow ed und er the follow ing cond i-
tions: The gear selector must be in NEUTRAL, the
distance to be traveled must not exceed 30 miles (48 km),
and the tow ing speed must not exceed 30 mph (48
