Weigh t-Carryin g  Hitch
WARN ING!
A  weight-carrying     hitch   supports    the   trailer   tongu  e
weight,  just as  if it were luggage   located at  a hitch ball  or
som e other  connecting   point  of the  vehicle.  These kind s
of hitches  are the  most  popular  on  the market   tod ay and
they  are   commonly   used  to  tow   small-  and   medium-
sized  trailers.
It is  importan  t that  you  do not  exceed  the  maxim um
fron t or  rear GAWR.  A dangerou  s  drivin g condition
can resu lt  if eith er ratin g is  exceed ed. You could  lose
control  of  the  veh icle and  have  an  accid ent.
Tongue  Weigh t (TW)
Weigh t-Distrib  utin g Hitch
Tongu e weight  (TW)  is the  downw  ard  force exerted   on
the hitch  ball by the  trailer. In most  cases, it shou ld not  be
less than   10% or more  than   15% of the  trailer  load . You
must  consid er this  as  part  of the  load on  you r vehicle.
A weight-d  istribu ting  system  works   by  applying   lever-  5
age  throu gh  spring  (load ) bars.  They  are  typ ically used
for  heavier  load s, to  distribu  te trailer   tongu e weight   to
the  tow vehicle’s  front  axle and  the  trailer  axle(s).  When
used  in accord ance with  the  manu factu rers’ directions,  it
provid es  for a  more  level  rid e, offering  more  consistent
steering   and   brake   control  thereby   enhancing    tow ing
safety. The addition   of a friction /  hyd rau lic sway  control
also dampens   sway  caused  by traffic and  crossw ind s and
contribu tes  positively  to  tow vehicle  and  trailer  stability.
Trailer  sway   control   and   a  weight    distribu ting   (load
equ alizing)  hitch  are  recom mend ed  for heavier   Tongu e
Weights (TW) and  may  be requ ired depend  ing on Vehicle
and  Trailer configu ration  /  load ing to  comply  with gross
axle weight   rating  (GAWR) requ irem ents.
Fron tal Area
Frontal  area is the maxim um  height  and maxim um  width
of the  front  of a trailer.
Trailer  Sway  Con trol
The trailer  sway  control  is  a telescop ing  link that  can  be
installed  betw een the hitch  receiver  and the  trailer tongu e
that  typ ically provid es adjustable  friction  associated  with
the  telescop ing motion   to dampen   any  unw anted  trailer
swaying  motions   while  traveling.
