The Sid e Impact SRS Sid e Curtain Airb ag are de-
signed to activate only in certain side collisions. When
the ACM (with side impact option) detects a collision
requ iring the side curtain airbag to inflate, it signals
the inflators on the crash side of the vehicle. A quantity
of nontoxic gas is generated to inflate the side curtain
airbag. The inflating side curtain airbag pushes the
outsid e edge of the head liner out of the way and
covers the wind ow. The airbag inflates in abou t 30
millisecond s (abou t one quarter of the time that it
takes to blink you r eyes) with enou gh force to injure
you if you are not belted and seated prop erly, or if
item s are positioned in the area where the side curtain
airbag inflates. This especially applies to child ren. The
side curtain airbag is only abou t 3-1/ 2 inches (9 cm)
thick when it is inflated .

The Driver and Fron t Passen ger Airb ag/In flator
Units are located in the center of the steering wheel
and the passenger side of the instru ment panel. When
the ACM detects a collision requ iring the airbags, it
signals the inflator units. A large quantity of nontoxic
gas is generated to inflate the front airbags. Different
airbag inflation rates may be possible based on colli-
sion severity. The steering wheel hu b trim cover, and
the upper passenger side of the instru ment panel
separate and fold out of the way, as the bags inflate to
their full size. The bags fully inflate in abou t 50 - 70
millisecond s. This is abou t half of the time that it takes
to blink you r eyes. The bags then quickly deflate while
help ing to restrain the driver and front passenger. The
