Two Types of Signals
NOTE:    On   vehicles  so   equ ipped  the   rad io, steering
wheel   rad io controls   and   6  disc  CD/ DVD   changer   if
equ ipped,   will  rem ain  active  for  10  minu tes  after   the
ignition  has  been turned   off, and  the driver  door  has  not
been  opened . This  featu re is program  mable  throu gh  the
There   are  two   basic  typ es  of   rad io  signals...  AM   or
Amplitude   Mod ulation,  in  which  the transm  itted  sou nd
causes  the  amplitude,    or  height,  of  the  rad io waves   to
vary...  and  FM  or Frequ ency  Mod ulation,   in which   the
frequ ency of  the wave  is  varied  to carry  the  sou nd .

equ ipped.  Refer to “Delay  Pow er Off to Accessories  Until
Exit” und er  “Personal  Settings”   in the  Electronic  Vehicle
Inform ation  Center  section  for details.
Electrical Disturbances
Radio  waves  may  pick up  electrical  distu rbances  during
transm ission.   They  mainly   affect  the  wave   amplitude,
and   thu s  rem ain  a  part    of  the  AM   recep tion.  They
interfere   very  little   with  the  frequ ency   variations   that
carry  the  FM signal.
CASSETTE TAPE AND PLAYER MAINTENANCE
To keep  the  cassette  tap es and  player  in good  cond ition,
take  the follow ing  precau tions:
AM Reception
1.
sou nd quality   and tap e durability   will  be greatly  dimin-
ished .
Do not  use cassette  tap es longer  than  C-90; otherw ise,
AM sou nd is based  on  wave amplitude,   so AM  recep tion
can be disru pted  by  such things  as lightning,   power  lines
and  neon  signs.
2.
slackness  and  dust  when  it  is not  in use.
Keep  the   cassette   tap e  in  its  case   to  protect   from
FM Reception
Because  FM  transm ission  is  based   on  frequ ency varia-
tions,  interference   that  consists   of amplitude    variations
can be  filtered  out,  leaving  the  recep tion relatively  clear,
which  is the  major  featu re of FM  rad io.
3.
and  magnetic  fields  such  as the  rad io speakers.
Keep the  cassette  tap e away from  direct  sunlight,  heat
