It is dangerou s to shift the selector lever out of “P” or
“N” if the engin e speed is high er than idle speed . If
you r foot is not firm ly on the brak e pedal, the
veh icle could accelerate quickly forw ard or in re-
verse. You could lose control of the veh icle and hit
som eon e or som eth ing. Only shift into gear when
the engin e is idlin g norm ally and when you r righ t
foot is firm ly on the brak e pedal.
Uninten ded movem ent of a veh icle could injure
those in and near the veh icle. As with all veh icles,
you should never exit a veh icle while the engin e is
running. Before exitin g a veh icle, you should alw ays
shift the veh icle into P (Park ), rem ove the key from
the ign ition , and apply the park ing brak e. Once the
key is rem oved from the ign ition , the tran smission
shift lever is lock ed in the P (Park ) position , secu rin g
the veh icle again st unwanted movem ent. Furth er-
more, you should never leave child ren unatten ded
insid e a veh icle.
Gear Ran ges
P (Park)
Supplements the parking brake by locking the trans-
mission. The engine can be started in this range. Never
use P (Park) while the vehicle is in motion. Apply the
parking brake when leaving the vehicle in this range.
Alw ays apply the parking brake first, and then place
the selector in P (Park) position.
The follow ing ind icators shou ld be used to ensu re that
you have engaged the transm ission shift lever into the P
(Park) position:

Look at the shift ind icator display on the instru ment
panel to ensu re it is in the P (Park) position.
