CAUTIO N!
This range eliminates shifts into Overd rive. The trans-
mission will operate norm ally in First, Second and
Third while in this range. The “3” position shou ld also
be used when descend ing steep grad es to prevent
brake system distress.
•
Never race the engin e with the brak es on and the
veh icle in gear, and never hold the veh icle on an
inclin e with out applyin g the brak es. These prac-
tices can cause overh eatin g and damage to the
tran smission .
NOTE: Using the “3” range while operating the vehicle
und er heavy operating cond itions will improve perfor-
mance and extend transm ission life by red ucing exces-
sive shifting and heat build up.

L (Low)
This range shou ld be used for engine braking when
descend ing very steep grad es. In this range, upshifts
will occur only to prevent engine oversp eed while
downshifts occur earlier than other gear range selec-
tions.
Torque Con verter Clu tch
A featu re designed to improve fuel econom y has been
added to the autom atic transm ission of this vehicle. A
clutch within the torqu e converter engages autom atically
at calibrated speed s. This may resu lt in a slightly differ-
ent feeling or resp onse during norm al operation in high
gear. When the vehicle speed drop s or during accelera-
tion, the clutch autom atically and smoothly disengages.
