Stop ping
Brak e Transmission Shift Interlock System
For brief stop s, leave the transm ission in gear and hold
the vehicle with the brake pedal. For longer stop s with
the engine idling, shift into the NEUTRAL or PARK
position and hold the vehicle with the parking brake.
When stop ping the vehicle uphill, do not hold it with the
accelerator; use the brake. This avoid s unnecessary trans-
mission heat build-up.
This vehicle is equ ipped with a brake transm ission shift
interlock system (BTSI) that hold s the gearshift lever in
the P (Park) position when the ignition switch is in the
LOCK position. To move the gear selector lever out of the
P (Park) position, the ignition switch must be turned to
the ON position, and the brake pedal must be depressed .

Maneuverin g
The transm ission electronics constantly monitor the 5
transm ission oil tem peratu re. If the transm ission exceed s
norm al operating tem peratu re, the transm ission will
change the way it shifts to help control the cond ition.
This may resu lt in a slightly different feeling or resp onse
during norm al operation in D (Drive) position. After the
transm ission cools down, it will retu rn to norm al opera-
tion.
To maneu ver in tight areas, control the vehicle speed by
grad ually releasing the brakes. Accelerate gently and
never abru ptly step on the accelerator.
To rock a vehicle out of soft grou nd (mud or snow ),
alternately shift from forw ard to reverse, while applying
only slight acceleration. Rocking a vehicle free in this
manner may cause the ABS or traction system malfunc-
tion ind icator light to come on. Turn off the engine and
restart the engine to clear the malfunction ind ication.
