D (Overdrive)
CAUTIO N!
This range shou ld be used for most city and highw ay
driving. It provid es smoothest up shifts and down
shifts and best fuel econom y. Select the “3” range
when frequ ent transm ission shifting occurs when us-
ing the Overd rive range, such as when operating the
vehicle und er heavy load ing cond itions (in hilly ter-
rain, traveling into strong head wind s, or while tow -
ing heavy trailers.
Before movin g the shift lever out of P (Park ), you
must turn the ign ition from LOCK to ON so the shift
lever is released . Otherw ise, damage to the shifter
could resu lt.
R (Reverse)

For moving the vehicle rearw ard . Alw ays stop before
moving the lever to R (Reverse), excep t when rocking
the vehicle.
NOTE: If the vehicle is started in cold outsid e tem pera-
tures, shifts into Overd rive may be delayed . Norm al
Overd rive and shifting operation will resu me when the
tem peratu re of the transm ission reaches the approp riate
tem peratu re. Refer to the “Note” und er “Torqu e Con-
verter Clutch” later in this section.
N (Neut ral)
Engine may be started in this range.
WARN ING!
If the transm ission tem peratu re gets too hot, the
transm ission may downshift out of Overd rive or en-
gage overd rive at higher vehicle speed s until the
transm ission cools down. After coold own, Overd rive
will resu me norm al operation.
Do not coast in N (Neutral) and never turn off the
ign ition to coast down a hill. These are unsafe
practices that lim it you r resp onse to changin g traffic
or road condition s. You migh t lose control of the
veh icle.
