the way to the floor and hold it there while cranking the
engine. This shou ld clear any excess fuel in case the
engine is flood ed.

Do not attem pt to push or tow you r veh icle to get
it started . Vehicles equipped with an autom atic
tran smission cannot be started this way. Unburned
fuel could enter the catalytic converter and, once
the engin e has started , ign ite and damage the
converter and veh icle. If the veh icle has a dis-
charged battery, booster cables may be used to
obtain a start from a booster battery or the battery
in anoth er veh icle. This typ e of start can be dan-
gerou s if done improp erly. Refer to Section 6 of
this manual for prop er jump startin g proced ures
and follow them carefu lly.
CAUTIO N!
To preven t damage to the starter, do not cran k the
engin e for more than 15 secon ds at a tim e. Wait 10 to
15
secon ds before tryin g again .

If the engine has been flood ed, it may start to run, but not
have enou gh power to continu e running when the key is
released . If this occurs, continu e cranking with the accel-
erator pedal pushed all the way to the floor. Release the
accelerator pedal and the key once the engine is running
smoothly.
Wit hout Tip Start — Manua l Transmission Only
If the engine fails to start after you have follow ed the
“Norm al Starting” or “Extrem e Cold Weather” proce-
dures, it may be flood ed. Push the accelerator pedal all
