MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE
ONBOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM — OBD II
CAUTIO N!
Your vehicle is equ ipped with a sop histicated onboard
diagnostic system called OBD II. This system monitors
the perform ance of the emissions, engine, and autom atic
transm ission control system s. When these system s are
operating prop erly, you r vehicle will provid e excellent
perform ance and fuel econom y, as well as engine emis-
sions well within current governm ent regu lations.

emission control system . It could also affect fuel
econ omy and drivab ility. The veh icle must be
serviced before any emission s tests can be per-
form ed.

If the “Malfu nction Indicator Ligh t” is flash ing
while the engin e is running, severe catalytic con-
verter damage and power loss will soon occur.
Immediate service is req uired .
If any of these system s requ ire service, the OBD II system
will turn on the “Malfu nction Ind icator Light.” It will
also store diagnostic codes and other inform ation to
assist you r service technician in making rep airs. Al-
thou gh you r vehicle will usually be drivable and not
need tow ing, see you r authorized dealer for service as
soon as possible.
Loose Fuel Filler Cap Message
After fuel is added, the vehicle diagnostic system can
determ ine if the fuel filler cap is possibly loose, improp -
erly installed , or damaged . A “gASCAP” message will be
displayed in the odometer. Tighten the gas cap until a
