STARTING AND OPERATING
NEUTRAL
WARN ING!
This  range   is  used   when  vehicle   is  stand ing  for  pro-
longed   period s  with   engine   running.   Engine   may   be
started  in  this  range.  Set  the parking   brake  if  you must
leave  the vehicle.
Never  use   the  PARK  position   as  a substitu  te  for
the   park ing   brak e.   Alw ays  apply    the   park ing
brak e fully   when  park ed  to guard   again st veh icle
movem ent  and  possib  le injury   or damage.
It is dangerou  s to move  the  shift lever  out  of PARK
or  NEUTRAL  if  the  engin e  speed   is  high er than
the  idle   speed . If  you r  foot  is  not  firm ly  on  the
brak e  pedal,  the  veh icle  could  accelerate   quickly
forw ard or  in reverse.  You could  lose  control  of the
veh icle and  hit  som eon e or som eth ing.  Only  shift
into  gear  when  the  engin  e is idlin  g norm ally  and
when  you r righ t foot  is firm ly  on the  brak e pedal.
NOTE:   Towing,  coasting,   or driving  the  vehicle  for any
other  reason  with  the shift  lever  in NEUTRAL  can resu lt
in  severe  transm  ission  damage.   Refer  to  “Recreational
Towing”  in Section  5 and “Towing  a Disabled  Vehicle”  in
Section  6 of this  manu al.
OVERDRIVE
This  range  is  used  for  most  city  and  highw ay  driving.
The  transm  ission  contains    an  electronically-controlled
fourth  gear  Overd rive,  and  will autom atically  shift  from
DRIVE  to OVERDRIVE  if  the  follow ing  cond itions  are
REVERSE
This range  is for  moving  the  vehicle backw ard . Use only     present:
after  the vehicle  has  come  to a  complete  stop .
The shift  lever  is in  DRIVE.
