brakes, if necessary, but do not allow the tires to lock.

you r vehicle’s abilities and be able to recover it if
som ething goes wrong. You shou ld never stop or shu t a
vehicle off when crossing deep water unless you ingested
water into the engine air intake. If the engine stalls, do
not attem pt to restart it. Determ ine if it has ingested
water first. The key to any crossing is low and slow. Shift
into 1st gear (manu al transm ission), or DRIVE (autom atic
transm ission), with the transfer case in the 4L (Low)
position and proceed very slow ly with a constant slow
speed {3 to 5 mph (5 to 8 km/ h) maxim um} and light
throttle. Keep the vehicle moving; do not try to accelerate
throu gh the crossing. After crossing any water higher
than the bottom of the axle differentials, you shou ld
insp ect all of the vehicle fluids for signs of water inges-
tion.
WARN ING!
If the engin e stalls or you lose head way or cannot
make it to the top of a steep hill or grad e, never
attem pt to turn arou nd. To do so may resu lt in
tip ping and rollin g the veh icle, which may resu lt in
severe injury. Alw ays back carefu lly straigh t down a
hill in REVERSE gear. Never back down a hill in
NEUTRAL usin g only the veh icle brak es. Never
drive diagon ally across a hill; alw ays drive straigh t
up or down.

Driving Through Water
Extrem e care shou ld be taken crossing any typ e of water.
Water crossings shou ld be avoid ed, if possible, and only
be attem pted when necessary in a safe, resp onsible
manner. You shou ld only drive throu gh areas which are
