entering any mud hole, get out and determ ine how deep
it is, if there are any hid den obstacles and if the vehicle
can be safely recovered if stu ck.
CAUTIO N!
On icy or slip pery road s, do not downshift at high
engin e RPM or veh icle speed s, becau se engin e brak -
ing may cause skidding and loss of control.
San d
Soft sand is very difficult to travel throu gh with full tire
pressu re. When crossing soft, sand y spots in a trail,
maintain you r vehicle’s momentu m and do not stop . The
key to driving in soft sand is using the approp riate tire
pressu re, accelerating slow ly, avoid ing abru pt maneu -
vers and maintaining the vehicle’s momentu m. If you are
going to be driving on large soft sand y areas or dunes,
red uce you r tire pressu re to a minim um of 15 psi
Mud
Deep mud creates a great deal of suction arou nd the tires
and is very difficult to get throu gh. You shou ld use 2nd
gear (manu al transm ission), or DRIVE (autom atic trans-
mission), with the transfer case in the 4L (Low) position
to maintain you r momentu m. If you start to slow to a
stop , try turning you r steering wheel no more than a 1/ 4
turn quickly back and forth for additional traction. Mud
holes pose an increased threat of vehicle damage and
getting stu ck. They are norm ally full of debris from
previou s vehicles getting stu ck. As a good practice before

(103
kPa) to allow for a greater tire surface area. Reduced
tire pressu re will drastically improve you r traction and
hand ling while driving on the soft sand , but you must
retu rn the tires to norm al air pressu re before driving on
pavem ent or other hard surfaces. Be sure you have a way
to reinflate the tires prior to red ucing the pressu re.
