maneuver,thetransmission shiftsautomatically as

SteeringinEmergencies
Therearetimeswhensteering canbemoreeffective
thanbraking. Forexample, youcomeoverahilland
findatruckstoppedinyourlane,oracarsuddenly pulls
outfromnowhere, orachilddartsoutfrombetween
parkedcarsandstopsrightinfrontofyou.These
problems canbeavoidedbybraking— ifyoucan
stopintime.Butsometimes youcannotstopintime
becausethereisnoroom.Thatisthetimeforevasive

Anemergency likethisrequires closeattention anda
quickdecision. Ifholdingthesteering wheelatthe
recommended 9and3o'clockpositions, itcanbe
turnedafull180degreesveryquicklywithoutremoving
eitherhand.Butyouhavetoactfast,steerquickly,and
justasquicklystraighten thewheelonceyouhave
avoidedtheobject.
