Trytoadjustthespeedsoyoucandrivethroughthe
curve.Maintainareasonable,  steadyspeed.Waitto
accelerate untiloutofthecurve,andthenaccelerate
gentlyintothestraightaway.
Tohelpyousteerinthedirection    youwanttogo,during
certainsharporsuddencornering   maneuvers, gear
selection iscontrolled. Thiswillmaximizetheavailable
drivewheeltorqueandminimize   thetransmission
response timeandshiftactivity.Duringthiskindof
maneuver,thetransmission  shiftsautomatically as
vehiclespeedchanges.
SteeringinEmergencies
Therearetimeswhensteering   canbemoreeffective
thanbraking. Forexample, youcomeoverahilland
findatruckstoppedinyourlane,oracarsuddenly      pulls
outfromnowhere,  orachilddartsoutfrombetween
parkedcarsandstopsrightinfrontofyou.These
problems canbeavoidedbybraking—   ifyoucan
stopintime.Butsometimes   youcannotstopintime
becausethereisnoroom.Thatisthetimeforevasive
actionsteering aroundtheproblem.
Anemergency likethisrequires  closeattention anda
quickdecision. Ifholdingthesteering  wheelatthe
recommended 9and3o'clockpositions,  itcanbe
turnedafull180degreesveryquicklywithoutremoving
eitherhand.Butyouhavetoactfast,steerquickly,and
justasquicklystraighten  thewheelonceyouhave
avoidedtheobject.

page 54.Itisbettertoremoveasmuchspeedas
possible fromacollision. Thensteeraroundthe
problem, totheleftorrightdepending   onthespace
available.

possible isagoodreasontopractice   defensive driving
atalltimesandwearsafetybeltsproperly.
