developed bytheUnitedStatesNational Highway
TrafficSafetyAdministration (NHTSA), which
gradestiresbytreadwear,traction, and
temperature performance. Thisapplies onlyto
vehicles soldintheUnitedStates. Thegradesare
moldedonthesidewalls ofmostpassenger car
tires.TheUniform TireQuality Grading (UTQG)
systemdoesnotapplytodeeptread,winter-type
snowtires,space-saver,ortemporary usespare
tires,tireswithnominalrimdiameters of
upontheactualconditions oftheiruse,however,
andmaydepartsignificantly fromthenormdueto
variations indrivinghabits, service practices, and
differences inroadcharacteristics andclimate.
Traction–AA,A,B,C
Thetraction grades,fromhighest tolowest, are
AA,A,B,andC.Thosegradesrepresent thetire's
ability tostoponwetpavement asmeasured
undercontrolled conditions onspecified
government testsurfaces ofasphalt andconcrete.
