Inaskid,adrivercanlosecontrolofthevehicle.
Defensive driversavoidmostskidsbytaking
reasonable caresuitedtoexisting conditions, andby
notoverdriving thoseconditions. Butskidsarealways
possible.
Ofcourse,traction isreducedwhenwater,snow,ice,
gravel,orothermaterial isontheroad.Forsafety,slow
downandadjustyourdrivingtotheseconditions. Itis
important toslowdownonslippery surfaces because
stopping distance willbelongerandvehiclecontrol
morelimited.
Thethreetypesofskidscorrespond tothevehicle's
threecontrolsystems.Inthebrakingskid,thewheels
arenotrolling. Inthesteering orcornering skid,too
muchspeedorsteering inacurvecausestirestoslip
andlosecornering force.Andintheacceleration skid,
toomuchthrottle causesthedrivingwheelstospin.
Whiledrivingonasurfacewithreducedtraction, try
yourbesttoavoidsuddensteering, acceleration,
orbraking, including reducing vehiclespeedbyshifting
toalowergear.Anysuddenchangescouldcausethe
tirestoslide.Youmaynotrealizethesurfaceisslippery
untilthevehicleisskidding. Learntorecognize warning
clues—suchasenoughwater,ice,orpackedsnowon
theroadtomakeamirrored surface—andslowdown
whenyouhaveanydoubt.
Remember: Anytraction controlsystemhelpsavoid
onlytheacceleration skid.Ifthetraction controlsystem
isoff,thenanacceleration skidisbesthandledby
easingyourfootofftheaccelerator pedal.
Ifthevehiclestartstoslide,easeyourfootoffthe
accelerator pedalandquicklysteerthewayyouwant
thevehicletogo.Ifyoustartsteering quicklyenough,
thevehiclemaystraighten out.Alwaysbereadyfora
secondskidifitoccurs.
Remember: Antilock brakeshelpavoidonlythe
brakingskid.
