belts.Frontalairbagsdistribute theforceoftheimpact
moreevenlyovertheoccupant's upperbody,stopping
theoccupantmoregradually.Seat-mounted sideimpact
androof-rail airbagsdistribute theforceoftheimpact
moreevenlyovertheoccupant's upperbody.
Inadeployment event,thesensingsystemsendsan
electrical signaltriggering areleaseofgasfromthe
inflator.Gasfromtheinflator fillstheairbagcausingthe
bagtobreakoutofthecoveranddeploy.Theinflator,
theairbag,andrelatedhardwareareallpartofthe
airbagmodule.
Butairbagswouldnothelpinmanytypesofcollisions,
primarily becausetheoccupant's motionisnottoward

Frontalairbagmodulesarelocatedinsidethesteering
wheelandinstrument panel.Forvehicles with
seat-mounted sideimpactairbags,thereareairbag
modulesinthesideofthefrontseatbacks closesttothe
door.Forvehicles withroof-rail airbags, thereareairbag
modulesintheceilingofthevehicle, neartheside
windowsthathaveoccupant seatingpositions.
Airbagsshouldneverberegarded asanything more
thanasupplement tosafetybelts.

Afterthefrontalairbagsandseat-mounted sideimpact
airbagsinflate, theyquicklydeflate, soquicklythat

sometimeaftertheydeploy.Somecomponents ofthe
