Passinganothervehicleonatwo-laneroadcanbe
dangerous. Toreducetheriskofdangerwhilepassing:
Inaskid,adrivercanlosecontrolofthevehicle.
Defensive driversavoidmostskidsbytaking
reasonable caresuitedtoexisting conditions, andby
notoverdriving thoseconditions. Butskidsarealways
possible.

Lookdowntheroad,tothesides,andto
crossroads forsituations thatmightaffecta
successful pass.Ifindoubt,wait.
Thethreetypesofskidscorrespond tothevehicle's
threecontrolsystems.Inthebrakingskid,thewheels
arenotrolling. Inthesteering orcornering skid,too
muchspeedorsteering inacurvecausestirestoslip
andlosecornering force.Andintheacceleration skid,
toomuchthrottle causesthedrivingwheelstospin.

Watchfortrafficsigns,pavement markings, and
linesthatcouldindicate aturnoranintersection.
Nevercrossasolidordouble‐solidlineonyour
sideofthelane.

Donotgettooclosetothevehicleyouwantto
pass.Doingsocanreduceyourvisibility.
Remember: Anytraction controlsystemhelpsavoid
onlytheacceleration skid.Ifthetraction controlsystem
isoff,thenanacceleration skidisbesthandledby
easingyourfootofftheaccelerator pedal.

LossofControl
Ifthevehiclestartstoslide,easeyourfootoffthe
accelerator pedalandquicklysteerthewayyouwant
thevehicletogo.Ifyoustartsteering quicklyenough,
thevehiclemaystraighten out.Alwaysbereadyfora
secondskidifitoccurs.
Letusreviewwhatdrivingexpertssayaboutwhat
happenswhenthethreecontrolsystems—brakes,
steering, andacceleration—donothaveenough
friction wherethetiresmeettheroadtodowhatthe
driverhasasked.
