WeightoftheTrailerTongue
Thetongueload(A)ofanytrailerisanimportant weight
tomeasurebecauseitaffectsthetotalgrossweightof
thevehicle. TheGrossVehicleWeight(GVW)includes
thecurbweightofthevehicle, anycargocarriedinit,
andthepeoplewhowillberidinginthevehicle. Ifthere
arealotofoptions,equipment, passengers orcargoin
thevehicle, itwillreducethetongueweightthevehicle
cancarry,whichwillalsoreducethetrailerweightthe
vehiclecantow.Iftowingatrailer,thetongueload
mustbeaddedtotheGVWbecausethevehiclewillbe
carrying thatweight,too.SeeLoadingtheVehicle on
page 5‑18 formoreinformation aboutthevehicle's
maximumloadcapacity.
Usingaweight-carrying hitch,thetrailertongue(A)
shouldweigh10to15percentofthetotalloadedtrailer
weight(B).
Afterloadingthetrailer,weighthetrailerandthenthe
tongue,separately,toseeiftheweightsareproper.
Iftheyarenot,adjustments mightbemadebymoving
someitemsaroundinthetrailer.
TotalWeightontheVehicle'sTires
Besurethevehicle's tiresareinflated totheupper
limitforcoldtires.Thesenumberscanbefoundonthe
Certification/Tire label.SeeLoadingtheVehicle on
page 5‑18.MakesurenottogoovertheGVWlimitfor
thevehicle, including theweightofthetrailertongue.
