theopenroad.Getacquainted withthefeelofhandling
andbrakingwiththeaddedweightofthetrailer.And
alwayskeepinmindthatthevehicleyouaredrivingis
nowlongerandnotasresponsive asthevehicleisby
itself.
Morepassingdistance isneededwhentowingatrailer.
Becausetherigislonger,itisnecessary togomuch
fartherbeyondthepassedvehiclebeforereturning to
thelane.
BackingUp
Holdthebottomofthesteering wheelwithonehand.
Then,tomovethetrailertotheleft,movethathandto
theleft.Tomovethetrailer totheright,moveyourhand
totheright.Alwaysbackupslowlyand,ifpossible,
havesomeoneguideyou.
Beforestarting, checkalltrailerhitchpartsand
attachments, safetychains,electrical connectors,
lamps,tiresandmirroradjustments. Ifthetrailerhas
electric brakes,startthevehicleandtrailermovingand
thenapplythetrailerbrakecontroller byhandtobesure
thebrakesareworking. Thischeckstheelectrical
connection atthesametime.
MakingTurns
Notice: Makingverysharpturnswhiletrailering
couldcausethetrailertocomeincontactwiththe
vehicle. Thevehiclecouldbedamaged. Avoid
makingverysharpturnswhiletrailering.
Duringthetrip,checkoccasionally tobesurethatthe
loadissecure,andthatthelampsandanytrailer
brakesarestillworking.
Whenturningwithatrailer,makewiderturnsthan
normal.Dothissothetrailerwillnotstrikesoft
shoulders, curbs,roadsigns,treesorotherobjects.
Avoidjerkyorsuddenmaneuvers. Signalwellin
advance.
FollowingDistance
Stayatleasttwiceasfarbehindthevehicleaheadas
youwouldwhendrivingthevehiclewithoutatrailer.
Thiscanhelptoavoidsituations thatrequireheavy
brakingandsuddenturns.
