Before you start you r vehicle, do the follow ing:

Make sure all occupants in the vehicle
bu ckle their safety belts. See Safety Restraints
in the Ind ex for more details.

Make sure the head lam ps and other
accessories are tu rned off when starting.
If you have an autom atic tran saxle , make
sure that the gearshift is in P (Park) and the
parking brake is set before you tu rn the key.
If you have an au tom atic transaxle, you r
vehicle has a special shift-lock safety featu re.
It prevents you from moving the gearshift
lever ou t of the P (Park) position unless the
ignition is in the ON position and you r foot
is on the brake. To move the gearshift lever,
you must also depress the thu mb bu tton.
If you have a manual tran saxle , make sure
that the parking brake is fully set, push the
clutch pedal to the floor, and put the
gearshift into Neutral before you tu rn the
key. (Rem ember, the starter will operate
only if the clutch pedal is pushed all the
way to the floor.)

Before you start you r vehicle, you shou ld
check the warning lights on the instru ment
panel to make sure that they work. Refer to
the Warning Lights and Gauges chap ter.
Startin g Your Engin e
To start you r engine:

Follow the step s und er Preparing to Start
Your Vehicle at the beginning of this section.

Turn the ignition key to the ON position.
DO NOT depress the accelerator pedal when
starting you r engine. DO NOT use the
accelerator while the vehicle is parked .
