Ford Motor Com pany strongly recom mend s that
used lead -acid batteries be retu rned to an
au thorized recycling facility for disposal.

Because you r vehicle’s engine is electronically
controlled by a com puter, som e control
cond itions are maintained by pow er from the
battery. If you ever disconnect the battery or
install a new battery, you must allow the
com puter to relearn its idle cond itions before
you r vehicle will drive prop erly. To begin this
process put the gearshift in P (Park) (au tom atic
transaxle) or Neutral (manu al transaxle), tu rn off
all the accessories, and start the vehicle. Let the
engine idle for at least one minu te. The
relearning process will com plete au tom atically as
you drive the vehicle.
If you do not let the engine relearn its idle, the
idle qu ality of you r vehicle may be ad versely
affected until the idle is relearned . Your vehicle
will eventu ally relearn its idle while you drive
it, bu t it takes much longer than if you use the
previou s proced ure.
