In som e localities it may becom e a legal
requ irem ent to pass an
Insp ection/ Maintenance (I/ M) test of the
On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) II system . If the
vehicle’s pow ertrain system or its battery has
just been serviced , the OBD II system is reset to
a not read y for I/ M testing cond ition. To
prep are for I/ M testing, the law specifies a
“need for ad ditional mixed city and highw ay
driving to com plete the check” of the OBD II
system . As soon as all of the OBD II system
checks are successfu lly com pleted , the OBD II
system is set to the read y cond ition. The am ount
of driving requ ired to reach the read y cond ition
varies with ind ivid ual driving patterns. To
com plete this requ irem ent in the minim um
am ou nt of tim e, refer to the OBD II Drive Cycle
defined below . If the vehicle ow ner cannot or
does not want to do the ad ditional driving
requ ired by law , a service center can perform
this drive cycle as it wou ld any other typ e of
rep air work.
OBD II Drive Cycle (1.9L Engin e only)
The follow ing step s must be ru n in the ord er
show n. If any step s are interru pted , rep eat the
preced ing step . Any safe driving mod e is
accep table betw een step s.
NOTE: Alw ays drive veh icle in a safe manner
accord ing to traffic condition s and obey
all traffic law s.
