with you r anti-lock brake system , you may not
have total control of you r vehicle when braking
on road s with loose surfaces such as snow or
gravel, holes in the pavem ent, or alternating
patches of slip pery and dry surfaces.
Each tim e you tu rn the ignition key to the ON
position, the anti-lock brake system will function
throu gh one test cycle. When this hap pens, the
anti-lock light (ABS) will com e on for up to six
second s. If the light stays on longer than six
second s, shu t off the engine and restart. If it
rem ains on, it means the anti-lock brake system
is disabled and shou ld be serviced immediately
to restore the benefits of the anti-lock featu re.
Norm al braking is not affected unless the red
brake warning light is also lit.
The anti-lock brake system has self-check
cap abilities. As described above, the system
tu rns on the anti-lock light each tim e you start
you r engine. After the engine is started and the
anti-lock light tu rns off, the system perform s
another test the first tim e the vehicle reaches

mph (11 km / h). The system tu rns on the ABS
pump motor for ap proxim ately 1/ 2 second . At
this tim e, a mechanical noise may be heard . This
is a norm al part of the self-check featu re. If a
malfu nction is found during this check the
anti-lock light will com e on.
Ford Motor Com pany has not fou nd any
negative effects of mobile rad io transm itting
equ ipment installed on vehicles with the ABS
system provid ing that the rad io is installed
accord ing to the rad io manu factu rer’s
instru ctions. How ever, if you have had a mobile
rad io transm itter installed and the ABS light
com es on (at any tim e other than immediately
