Battery
If the original equ ipment maintenance-free
battery is rep laced , it may be rep laced by a
low -maintenance battery. See Motorcraft Parts at
the end of this chap ter for the prop er
rep lacem ent battery.
The low -maintenance battery has rem ovable vent
cap s for checking the electrolyte level and
ad ding water. The electrolyte level shou ld be
checked at least every 24 months or 24,000 miles
(40,000
km ) in tem peratu res up to 90˚F (32˚C)
and more often in tem peratu res above 90˚F

(32˚C).

If the level gets low , refill the battery with
distilled water. If necessary, you can ad d tap
water to the battery, provid ed the water is not
hard or does not have a high mineral or alkali
content. If the battery need s water qu ite often,
have the charging system checked for a possible
malfu nction.
If you disconnect the battery, the engine must
“relearn” its idle cond itions before you r vehicle
will drive prop erly. To find ou t how the engine

If the battery has been disconnected , you will
have to reset the clock and the preset stations on
you r rad io once the battery is reconnected .
