If you need to shift out of P (Park) by using the
alternate proced ure described above, it is
possible that a fuse has blow n and that you r
brakelam ps may also not be functional. Please
refer to the chap ter titled Servicing Your Escort in
this Ow ner Guide for instru ctions on checking
and rep lacing fuses.

Drivin g
When to use j (Overdrive)
j (Overd rive) is the usual driving position for
an au tom atic overd rive transaxle. It works the
sam e way D (Drive) works, au tom atically
upshifting or dow nshifting as the vehicle speed s
or slow s.
How ever, j (Overd rive) also shifts into a fou rth
gear — an overd rive gear — when you r vehicle
cru ises at a consistent speed for any length of
tim e. This fourth gear will increase you r fuel
econom y when you travel at cru ising speed s.
j (Overd rive) may not be ap prop riate for
certain terrain. If the transaxle shifts back and
forth betw een third and fou rth gears while you
are driving on hilly road s or if you r vehicle
requ ires ad ditional pow er for climbing hills, shift
to D (Drive).
