Drivin g Your Escort
Proced ures for driving you r vehicle will vary
depend ing on which typ e of transaxle you r
vehicle has. You may be fam iliar with the term
“transm ission.” We use transaxle becau se it is a
more accu rate term for vehicles that have
front-w heel drive.
Your vehicle will have one of the follow ing
typ es of transaxles:
❑an au tom atic overd rive transaxle, or
❑a manu al transaxle.
Your vehicle is equ ipped with an Electronic
Engine Control Mod ule that limits engine speed s
with a cut-ou t mod e to prom ote durability.

Overd rive Tran saxle
Your au tom atic overd rive transaxle provid es
fully au tom atic operation in either k
(Overd rive) or D (Drive). Driving with the shift
selector in k (Overd rive) gives the best fuel
econom y for norm al driving cond itions. For
manu al control, start in L (Low ) and then shift
manu ally.
