“N” (Neut ral)
“1” (First )
Shift into “N” (Neutral) when the vehicle is stand ing for
prolonged period s with the engine running. The engine
may be started in this range. Set the parking brake if you
must leave the vehicle.
For hard pulling at low speed s in mud, sand , snow, or on
steep grad es. Begins and stays in low gear with no
upshift. Provid es engine compression braking at low
speed s.
NOTE: Towing the vehicle, coasting, or driving for any
other reason with selector lever in “N” (Neutral) can
resu lt in severe transm ission damage. Refer to “Recre-
ational Towing” in Section 5 and “Towing a Disabled
Vehicle” in Section 6 of this manu al.
Overd rive Operation
The overd rive autom atic transm ission contains an elec-
tronically controlled fourth speed (Overd rive). The trans-
mission will autom atically shift from 3rd gear to Over- 5
drive if the follow ing cond itions are present:
“D” (Drive)
For most city and highw ay driving.
• The transm ission selector is in “D” (Drive).
•
The vehicle speed is above approxim ately 30 mph (48
km/ h).
“2”
(Second)
For moderate grad es and to assist braking on dry pave-
ment or in mud and snow. Begins at a stop in low gear
with autom atic upshift to 2nd gear. Will not shift to 3rd.

The “TOW/ HAUL” button has not been activated .
