caution  and  maintain  a stead y  controlled  speed  less than
mph  (8 km/ h)  in deep  water  to minim ize  wave effects.

After  driving   throu gh  deep  water,  insp ect  you r vehicle
fluids  and  lubricants  (engine,  transm ission,  axle, transfer
case)  to assu re  they  have  not  been  contam inated  . Con-
tam inated  fluids  and lubricants   (milky, foam y in appear-
ance)  shou ld be  flushed / changed   as soon  as possible   to
prevent  component   damage.
Flow ing Water
If  the  water   is  swift   flowing  and   rising   (as  in  storm
run-off)   avoid   crossing   until   the   water   level  reced es
and / or  the   flow   rate  is   red uced.  If  you   must   cross
flowing-w ater,  avoid   depths   in excess  of  9  inches.  The
flowing   water   can  erod e  the  stream bed   causing   you r
vehicle  to sink into  deeper  water.  Determ ine exit  point(s)
that  are  downstream    of  you r  entry  point   to  allow  for
drifting.
Driving In Snow, Mud and  Sand
In  heavy  snow,  when   pulling   a load ,  or for  additional   5
control  at slow er  speed s, shift  the transm  ission  to a low
gear  and shift  the transfer   case to 4WD  Low if necessary.
Refer  to  “Fou r-Wheel  Drive  Operation”   in  this  section.
Do not  shift  to  a lower  gear  than  necessary   to maintain
head way.  Over-revving   the  engine  can  spin  the  wheels
and  traction  will  be lost.
Standing   Water
Avoid  driving  in  stand ing  water  deeper   than  20 inches,
and  red uce  speed   approp riately   to  minim ize  wave  ef-
fects. Maxim um  speed  in 20 inches of water  is less  than 5
mph  (8 km/  h).
Avoid  abru pt  downshifts   on  icy  or  slippery   road s, be-
cause  engine   braking   may  cause   skid ding  and  loss  of
control.
