Towing Tips
If you REGULARLY tow a trailer for more than 45
minu tes of continu ous operation, then change the auto-
matic transm ission fluid and filter accord ing to the
interval specified for “police, taxi, fleet, or frequ ent trailer
tow ing” in the “Maintenance Sched ule” in this manu al.
Before setting out on a trip , practice turning, stop ping,
and backing the trailer in an area located away from
heavy traffic.
If using a manu al transm ission vehicle for trailer tow ing,
all starts must be in FIRST gear to avoid excessive clutch
slippage.
Towing Tips — TOW/H AUL
To red uce potential for autom atic transm ission overheat-
ing, press the “TOW HAUL” button when driving in
hilly areas or shift the transm ission to Drive position “2” 5
on more severe grad es. Refer to “Au tom atic Transm is-
sion” in this section for additional inform ation.
Towing Tips — Autom atic Transmission

frequ ent shifting occurs while in this range, you will
want to activate the TOW/ HAUL featu re. Refer to “Au -
tom atic Transm ission” in this section for additional in-
form ation.
Towing Tips — Electron ic Speed Con trol (If

NOTE: Using the TOW/ HAUL featu re while operating
the vehicle und er heavy operating cond itions will im-
prove perform ance and extend transm ission life by re-
ducing excessive shifting and heat build up. This action
will also provid e better engine braking.
− Don’t use in hilly terrain or with heavy load s.
−
When using the speed control, if you experience speed
drop s greater than 10 mph (16 km/ h), disengage until
you can get back to cruising speed .
