MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE
Drive Belts — Check Condition  and Tension
Belt  tension   is  controlled    by  means   of   an  autom atic
tensioner.   Therefore,   no   belt   tension   adjustm ents   are
requ ired . However,    belt  and   belt   tensioner   cond ition
shou ld  be   insp ected  period  ically  and   rep laced   if  re-
quired . Improp er belt  tension  can cause  belt slippage  and
failu re.  Low  generator    belt  tension   can  cause   battery
failu re.
Spark Plugs
Spark  plugs  must   fire prop erly  to  assu re engine  perfor-
mance  and   emission  control.   New  plugs   shou ld be  in-
stalled  at  the specified  mileage.   The entire  set  shou ld be
rep laced if there  is any  malfunction  due  to a faulty  spark
plug.  Malfu nctioning   spark  plugs  can  damage   the cata-
lytic converter.  Refer  to “Fluids,  Lubricants,  and  Genu ine
Parts”  in this section  for the prop er  typ e of spark plug  for
use  in you r vehicle.
Insp ect  belts  for  evid ence   of  cuts,  cracks,   glazing,   or
frayed  cord s and  rep laced  if there  is  ind ication of  dam-
age,  which  could  resu lt  in  belt failu re.  Also, check  belt
rou ting to make  sure  there is no  interference  betw een the
belts  and other  engine  components.   See  you r authorized
dealer  for  service.
Engine Air Cleaner Filter
Refer to  the “Maintenance    Sched ule” in Section  8 of this
manu al  for  engine  air  cleaner   filter  maintenance   inter-
vals.
NOTE:    Be sure  to follow  the  “dusty   or off-road  cond i-
tions”  maintenance   interval  if  applicable.
