MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE
Loose Fuel Filler Cap Message
For states, which have an I/ M (Insp ection and
Maintenance) requ irem ent, this check verifies the
follow ing: the MIL (Malfu nction Ind icator Light)
is functioning and is not on when the engine is running,
and that the OBD (On Board Diagnostic) system is read y
for testing.
If the vehicle diagnostic system determ ines that the fuel
filler cap in loose, improp erly installed , or damaged , a
“gASCAP” message will display in the instru ment clus-
ter. Tighten the gas cap until a “clicking” sou nd is heard .
This is an ind ication that the gas cap is prop erly tight-
ened . Press the trip odometer reset button to turn off the
message. If the problem persists, the message will appear
the next time the vehicle is started . This might ind icate a
damaged cap. If the problem is detected twice in a row,
the system will turn on the Malfu nction Ind icator Light
(MIL). Resolving the problem will turn the MIL light off.
Norm ally, the OBD system will be read y. The OBD
system may not be read y if you r vehicle was recently
serviced , if you recently had a dead battery, or a battery
rep lacem ent. If the OBD system shou ld be determ ined
not read y for the I/ M test, you r vehicle may fail the test.

which you can use prior to going to the test station. To
