Drivin g
When to use j (Overdrive)
j (Overd rive) is the usual driving position for
an au tom atic overd rive transaxle. It works the
sam e way D (Drive) works, au tom atically
upshifting or dow nshifting as the vehicle speed s
or slow s.
How ever, j (Overd rive) also shifts into a fou rth
gear — an overd rive gear — when you r vehicle
cru ises at a consistent speed for any length of
tim e. This fourth gear will increase you r fuel
econom y when you travel at cru ising speed s.
When to use D (Drive)
D (Drive) elim inates the excessive shifting
betw een third and fou rth gears that you r vehicle
som etim es does when you are traveling throu gh
hilly terrain in j (Overd rive). It also provid es
more engine braking than j (Overd rive) for
descend ing hills or city driving.
When to use 1 (First )
Use 1 (First) when ad ded engine braking is
desired when descend ing steep hills.
The au tom atic transaxle will shift to the prop er
gear to ascend any grad e withou t any need to
shift to 1 (First).
Do not go faster than 38 mph (61 km / h) in this
gear. You can upshift from 1 (First) to D (Drive)
or from 1 (First) to j (Overd rive) at any speed .
P (Park )
Alw ays com e to a com plete stop before you shift
into P (Park). Make sure that the gearshift is
secu rely latched in P (Park). This locks the
transaxle and prevents the front wheels from
rotating.
