Each tim e you tu rn the ignition key to the ON
position, the ABS will function throu gh one test
cycle. When this hap pens, the ABS light will
com e on for up to five second s. If the light stays
on longer than five second s, shu t off the engine
and restart. If it rem ains on, it means the ABS is
disabled and shou ld be serviced immediately to
restore the benefits of the anti-lock featu re.
Norm al braking is not affected unless the red
BRAKE system warning light is also lit.
ABS has self-check cap abilities. As described
above, the system tu rns on the ABS light each
tim e you start you r engine. After the engine is
started and the ABS light tu rns off, the system
perform s another test the first tim e the vehicle
reaches 4-9 mph (6-15 km / h). The system turns
on the ABS pump motor for ap proxim ately 1/ 2
second . At this tim e, a mechanical noise may be
heard . This is a norm al part of the self-check
featu re. If a malfu nction is found during this
check the ABS light will com e on.
Vehicles with ABS are identified with a label on
the front door pillar.
Ford Motor Com pany has not fou nd any
negative effects of mobile rad io transm itting
equ ipment installed on vehicles with the ABS
system provid ing that the rad io is installed
accord ing to the rad io manu factu rer’s
instru ctions. How ever, if you have had a mobile
rad io transm itter installed and the ABS light
com es on (at any tim e other than immediately
after tu rning the key to the ON position) have
you r mobile rad io dealer insp ect the rad io
installation. Also, if the ABS system is activated
other than during maxim um braking, have you r
mobile rad io installation checked .
