When to use D (Overdrive)
D (Overd rive) is the usual driving position for
an au tom atic overd rive transaxle. It
au tom atically upshifts or dow nshifts as the
vehicle speed s or slow s.
How ever, D (Overd rive) also shifts into a fou rth
gear — an overd rive gear — when you r vehicle
cru ises at a consistent speed for any length of
tim e. This fourth gear will increase you r fuel
econom y when you travel at cru ising speed s.
When to use D (O/D OFF)
You will notice that there is only one drive
position on you r gearshift ind icator (instead of
Drive and Overd rive). How ever, you will find a
switch labeled O/ D located on the gearshift
lever. Pu sh in the switch and the O/ D OFF light
in the instru ment cluster will illuminate. With
the O/ D OFF light illuminated , the transaxle
will operate in first, second and third gears and
will not shift into fou rth gear. Op erating in D
(O/ D OFF) elim inates the excessive shifting
betw een third and fou rth gears that you r vehicle
som etim es does when you are traveling throu gh
hilly terrain in D (Overd rive). It also provid es
more engine braking than D (Overd rive) for
descend ing hills or city driving.
To retu rn the transaxle to the norm al Overd rive
operation, press the O/ D OFF switch again. Use
this switch to select Overd rive or D (O/ D OFF)
whenever you drive you r vehicle.
