This light com es on when you tu rn the ignition
key to ON , bu t shou ld tu rn off when the engine
starts. If the light does not com e on when you
tu rn the ignition to ON or if it com es on and
stays on when you are driving, have you r
vehicle serviced as soon as possible. This
ind icates a possible problem with one of the
vehicle’s emission control system s. You do not
need to have you r vehicle tow ed in.
If the light tu rns on and off at one (1) second
intervals while you are driving the vehicle, it
means that the engine is misfiring. If this
cond ition persists, dam age could occur to the
engine or catalytic converter. Avoid heavy
acceleration and have you r vehicle serviced at
the first opportu nity. You do not need to have
you r vehicle tow ed in.
If the light tu rns on and off on rare occasions
while you are driving, it means that a
malfu nction occurred and the cond ition corrected
itself.
An exam ple of a cond ition which corrects itself
occurs when an engine ru nning out of fuel
begins to misfire. In this case, the Service Engine
Soon Warning Light may tu rn on and will then
set a Diagnostic Trou ble Cod e ind icating that the
engine was misfiring while the last of the fuel
was being consu med. After refu eling, the Service
Engine Soon Warning Light will tu rn off after
the vehicle has com pleted three consecu tive
warm up cycles withou t a misfire cond ition
occurring. A warm up cycle consists of engine
start from a cold cond ition (engine at am bient
tem peratu re) and ru nning until the engine
reaches norm al operating tem peratu re.
