Malfunct ion Indica tor Light
20. Airba g Light
This light is part of an onboard diagnostic system
called OBD that monitors engine and autom atic
transm ission control system s. The light will illu-
minate when the key is in the ON position before engine
start. If the bulb does not come on when turning the key
from OFF to ON, have the cond ition checked prom ptly.
This light turns on and rem ains on for seven
second s as a bulb check when the ignition
switch is first turned ON. If the light is not on
during starting, stays on, or turns on while
driving, have the system insp ected by an authorized

Certain cond itions such as a loose or missing gas cap,
poor fuel quality, etc. may illuminate the light after
engine start. The vehicle shou ld be serviced if the light
stays on throu gh several of you r typ ical driving cycles. In
most situ ations the vehicle will drive norm ally and will
not requ ire tow ing.
21. Temperature Gauge
The tem peratu re gau ge show s engine coolant tem -
peratu re. Any read ing within the norm al range
ind icates that the engine cooling system is operat-
ing satisfactorily.
The gau ge pointer will likely ind icate a higher tem pera-
ture when driving in hot weather, up mountain grad es,
or when tow ing a trailer. It shou ld not be allow ed to
exceed the upper limits of the norm al operating range.
If the Malfu nction Ind icator Light flashes when the
engine is running, seriou s cond itions may exist that
could lead to immediate loss of power or severe catalytic
converter damage. The vehicle shou ld be serviced as
soon as possible if this occurs.
